The National Ecological Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts measure Ecological Footprint and Biocapacity by component for production, trade, and consumption for over 200 countries and territories around the world from 1961 to the present. The National Accounts include tens of millions of data points from reputable international organizations, such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Energy Agency, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the Sea Around Us, and more. This data is produced at the host institution of the IEFLL partnership, the Ecological Footprint Initiative in the faculty of Environmental and Urban Change at York University. Students from York University and the University of Iceland complete the comprehensive training program at the Ecological Footprint Initiative to then co-produce an edition of the National Accounts.
A new edition of the National Accounts is produced each year to include updated data and an additional year of data. Each edition is released at an international online event, the Launch of the National Accounts that brings together Ecological Footprint enthusiasts from around the world. The launch is a time to celebrate the new data, any innovations or updates, and present ongoing research. The 2024 webinar recording is accessible below. The National Accounts data is fully open-access for anyone to download and explore. This downloadable data includes Ecological Footprint and Biocapacity, by total and by component, of production and of consumption, at a national level and on a world-total basis.
